National Development Agency to Host Public Dialogue – The Role and Contribution of Co-Operatives Towards the South African Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan. The National Development Agency (NDA) will host a virtual Public Dialogue on Wednesday, 22 June 2022 with the theme: “The role and contribution of co-operatives towards the South African economic reconstruction and recovery plan.”

The Coronavirus (“COVID-19”) outbreak created an unpredictable crisis for South African citizens, businesses and society at large, inclusive of co-operatives. The President of South Africa, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, announced the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan (ERRP) as the country moved to level 1 of the state of emergency. He stated that “in adversity so often comes opportunity. South Africa is now on the threshold of an important opportunity to imaginatively, and with a unity of purpose, reshape its economic landscape.” The current crisis presents an opportunity to reset the South African economy, with co-operatives playing a key role in creating sustainable opportunities to re-shape the South African economic landscape (NDA, 2021).

In the financial year 2021/22, The NDA appointed Redflank to conduct a research study on the role and contribution of co-operatives towards the South African ERRP. The purpose of this research was to identify the role, contribution and challenges faced by co-operatives in revitalising effective and sustainable economic activities in response to the governments’ ERRP initiative and the effect of COVID-19. The research was also to inform government, business and civil society regarding how to frame economic policies that would ignite and increase economic growth through well-structured co-operative efforts post the COVID-19 pandemic period in South Africa.

Based on insights from the NDA’s ‘’Role and Contribution of Cooperatives towards the South African Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan’’ (NDA, 2020), the dialogue will interrogate the role played by cooperatives towards the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan, the impediments faced by cooperatives toward their operations and existence, and the critical role of both Government and the Private sector in supporting the cooperatives towards restoration of the economy.
