Posted in Stories on 31 October 2023

The National Development Agency (NDA), an agency of government, has signed a memorandum of agreement with Africa Cooperatives Institute of South Africa (ACI-SA). This move formalises a partnership aimed at contributing to poverty eradication through supporting Cooperatives that create productive individuals, families and communities through self-help developmental programmes for achieving sustainable livelihoods and earning sustainable income through Cooperative enterprises in order to break the cycle of poverty.

The NDA and ACI-SA will jointly host the 3rd Conference on “Cooperatives and the Solidarity Economy” #CCSE2023 at Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg from 1st – 3rd November 2023. This is an annual academic conference that serves as a platform for knowledge creation and brings academics together to engage, share experiences and propose solutions to improve the development and sustainability of Cooperatives in South Africa and globally. South African scholars in the areas of cooperatives and development studies are also afforded a platform to present and get feedback on their papers on the progress of the cooperative sector in Africa, and South Affrica in particular.

The NDA’s turnaround strategy identifies cooperatives as one of the developmental vehicles for creating sustainable livelihoods for those classified as poor and dependant on state for meeting their basic daily basic needs through social protection programmes of the state. ACI-SA is a training and development institute of the University of Johannesburg providing capacities to cooperatives on principles of shared economy, social innovation and sustainable livelihoods. Together, the parties share a common interest in the eradication of poverty and its causes.

The 3-day #CCSE2023 conference will include a Young Scholars Workshop and two days focusing on panels, parallel sessions and keynote addresses by Hon Minister Thoko Didiza, Minister of Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Ms Ruth Nozabelo Bhengu, NDA Board Chairperson, Professor Vishwas Satgar of University of Witwatersrand and other academic experts.
