The Safe House - a home away from home for children and mothers in need of protection

Posted in Stories on 01 June 2023

28 May 2023, Hout Bay - The protection of children is in the spotlight for the Department of Social Development, including agencies National Development Agency (NDA) and South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), following the Child Protection Week campaign opening by Minister Lindiwe Zulu.

The campaign seeks to mobilise all sectors and communities towards embracing the holistic development, care and protection of children under the theme “Let us protect children during Covid-19 and beyond”.

The Safe House, a civil society organisation that received a R225 000,00 grant from the NDA  to empower survivors and support communities by providing abused women and children with a safe place, showcased their services to the community of Hout Bay.  The organisation assists female victims and their children with a safe place to heal, rebuild and reconnect at a home that accommodates them for a period of three months, followed by a referral to skills and job placement organisations. During the period, they are offered counselling, medical care and rehabilitation.

“Our services cater for the wellbeing of women and children who are affected by family issues related to violence, substance, sexual and psychological abuse and neglect in their homes. The funding received from the NDA has gone towards programmes geared for the protection of children, the response to child trauma and to engage positively in their society. Our work is enhanced greatly by financial support received from funders as well the communities that entrust us to provide them with care” says Cathy Cronje of The Safe House.

Minister of the Department of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu said, “Child protection week allows the DSD portfolio respond to issues that affect children within communities – together with non-profit organisations, all other spheres of government, communities and social workers. We are doing all we can, not only today but 365 days a year, to ensure that children reach their full potential in safe and enabling environments. We also do not leave parents and caregivers behind. I encourage South Africans to come with us on the journey to ensure that children remain children and enjoy their freedom to be children.”

“CPW is important for our organisation. A message to mother undergoing a hard time is to seek help at places of safety, as early as possible. To access a safe house, mothers can go to their nearest hospital, police station, DSD office or child protection organisation – they can also call 0800 001 005 and a social worker will assist”, says Cathy Cronje, Managing Director of The Safe House.
